Roger Ailes slinks away from Fox News as the man who made American journalism meaner

In the same moment that bombastic television star Donald Trump ascended to the top of the news cycle and became the leader of the GOP, Roger Ailes, one of the Republican Party’s most powerful behind-the-scenes media masters, hit rock bottom.

You couldn’t have written a more ironic ending for Ailes who’s stepped down as chairman of Fox News Channel, dogged by claims of sexual harassment by his network's biggest star, Megyn Kelly, and an explosive lawsuit from Gretchen Carlson, the former co-host of “Fox & Friends.”

The micromanaging media boss who built and managed — with an iron fist — Rupert Murdoch’s $2 billion cable news giant should have been basking in the glory of his network’s dominating ratings and the nomination of Trump, a longtime friend and frequent guest on many Fox News programs.

In fact, Trump’s run for the White House has been built on issues near and dear to Ailes and his blustery Fox News hosts: Hillary Clinton’s alleged crimes during the attacks in Benghazi, a desire for the projection of further American power across the globe and President Obama’s perceived failures to do so.

Instead, he’s sent packing by a formerly loyal Murdoch, presumably egged on by increasingly powerful sons and heirs Lachlan and James.

Ailes had been a war chief and close confidante to his media baron boss — even among Murdoch’s most trusted generals. He was, until now, the intimidating and seemingly unassailable force behind a powerful television empire that was considered by its devoted viewers as the conservative answer to what many believe is a mainstream media dominated and corrupted by liberals.

Ailes’ pit bull personality, tinged with paranoia, fueled the entire network’s take-no-prisoners approach. For more than two decades he’s run Fox News aggressively and unapologetically — as if it were a never-ending political campaign. Among his darker powers, Ailes allegedly used his formidable resources to gather intelligence on his perceived enemies and wielded such knowledge — sometimes behind the scenes, sometimes on a national stage — in a fashion that explicitly caters to and frequently fuels the fears and insecurities of white, working class viewers.
